How to Choose the Right Size Wall Art for Your Space
Share
Choosing a print is the easy part (maybe 😛) you find a photo that speaks to you and you just know. The harder question is: what size should I get?
Too small and it disappears on the wall. Too big and the room feels crowded. Nail it and watch the whole space change!
Here's how to choose the perfect size, whether you're filling a feature wall or adding a finishing touch to a hallway.
Aim for 60–75% of your wall width. Above a sofa or bed, A1 or 100×70 usually looks best. For a feature wall, go A0.
Start With the Wall, Not the Print
Before you think about sizes, measure your wall space. You don't need to be exact, just get a rough idea of the width and height you're working with.
A good rule of thumb: your artwork should fill about 60–75% of the available wall width. So if you've got a 2-metre wall above a sofa, you're looking at a piece that's roughly 1.2 to 1.5 metres wide.
If that sounds like a lot, it probably isn't. One of the most common mistakes people make is going too small. Art that's too small for the wall looks out of place and unplanned.

Room-by-Room Recommendations
Living Room
This is where most people hang their biggest piece. If it's going above the sofa, match the width of the artwork to about two-thirds the width of the sofa. For most setups, that's an A1 or 100 x 70cm print.
Got a large feature wall with nothing on it? Go A0. It sounds bold, but a single large print always looks more intentional than a collection of small frames.
Bedroom
Above the bed works best with A1 or 100 x 70cm in landscape orientation. You want it centred above the bedhead, not wider than the bed itself.
For a bedside accent, A3 in a frame is perfect — understated and personal.
Hallway
Hallways are great for portrait-orientation prints in A2 or A1. The vertical format suits narrow spaces, and a framed coastal print can turn a forgotten corridor into a feature.
Consider a series of 2–3 A3 prints in matching frames for a gallery wall effect.
Bathroom & Laundry
Keep it compact A3 is ideal. These rooms have limited wall space and higher humidity, so a smaller framed print works best. A beach or ocean scene in the bathroom is always a good call.
Home Office
A2 or A1 behind your desk or on the wall you face most. Choose something calming a wide ocean view or a quiet beach scene. You'll be looking at it a lot.
Airbnb or Holiday Rental
Go bigger than you think. A0 or 100 x 70cm prints make a space feel curated and professional. Guests notice good art, it photographs well, it gets mentioned in reviews, and it sets the tone for the entire stay. Our most popular Airbnb choice is a single large statement piece in the living area.
Landscape vs Portrait Orientation
Landscape (horizontal) prints work best on wide walls, above sofas, beds, dining tables, or as a feature piece. They suit open, spacious rooms.
Portrait (vertical) prints suit narrow walls, hallways, between windows, beside doorways, or stacked in a gallery wall. They draw the eye upward and add height to a room.
Most of our prints are available in both orientations. If you're unsure, landscape is the safer choice for most living spaces.
Framed vs Unframed
Every Coastal Reflections print is available unframed or in a choice of three timber frames: White, Natural Oak, or Black.
- White frame — clean and coastal, suits light and airy interiors
- Natural Oak — warm and earthy, pairs well with timber furniture and neutral tones
- Black frame — modern and bold, adds contrast and suits darker or more contemporary spaces
Our frames arrive ready to hang, eliminating the need for an extra trip to the framer! Crafted from sustainable Australian timber, our frames offer a competitive price compared to your local framer. Save time and hassle by letting us frame your print to last a lifetime.

Still Not Sure?
The easiest trick: cut a piece of paper or cardboard to the print size and tape it to the wall. Stand back and see how it feels. You'll know immediately if it's too big, too small, or just right.
